The crosswalks painted on SE Hawthorne since about a 1 1/2 years ago in the transportation improvement plan are dangerous. At nighttime pedestrians cannot be seen. They aren't well lit. There are small signs too. I think the street needs all the pedestrian friendliness it can get...especially since traffic is getting so heavy - but the crosswalks are close to other major intersections and appear to beg injury more than convienence.

agree completely!  i have both nearly been run down AND nearly run people down in these crosswalks.  I wonder what the solution is?  I think it might help to (gasp) disallow parking on either side of the cross walks - a lot of the problem seems to be that you don't see the pedestrian until they are all the way into the intersection.  But parking is already so difficult around there that I am sure that idea is not going to be a popular one.  Urban planner types - any ideas?
