Portland Japanese Garden   Jun 27
Category: Parks
Neighborhood: Arlington Heights
611 SW Kingston Ave.
Portland, 97205
(Disclosure: I work for the Garden!) The Portland Japanese Garden is a great experience all seasons. It's made up of five gardens including a walking pond, a flat garden and more! Busiest mid-summer. Tours are daily and free. Small fee for tripod use (unless you're a member), but otherwise photos are allowed.
Pros: Tranquil, changes by season, Internationally well rated
Cons: Busy during Summer Months

Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: The Pearl

I love the coffee here. And I like the Sip & Kranz. Or should it be "Sip & Crayons"? I like it just the way I like Jamison Square...but their also both very, very busy. The last time I went and had a cup and sat on the cement stacks, I was interviewed by a TV crew. The question is "what is one household chore I love to do?"
Pros: great coffee, family friendly
Cons: extraordinarily busy during the summer

Have you seen Mark Summer's Food-related roadshow on the Food Network or Travel Channel? This is his kind of place! Fun and classy. Great desserts and drinks. Parisan and Americana feel! Good for a late glass of wine or desserts and coffee - or all! Looks like they also make some sandwiches.

$2.50 micro-brew pints all-day! Looks like a hopping spot on a spring or summer evening to sit outside! But inside it was dead. It still took more than a few minutes to be acknowledged at the door. Then once sat outside we waited for over 20. Looking at the selection of only 3 or 4 "micro-brews" and the menu, it wasn't going to be worth another minute.
Pros: Enticing Happy Hour Specials
Cons: Inexcusable service for the low traffic

It's always weird to walk in here and see everyone smoking. A cool little bar at the corner of the Bagdad theater. I have bought cigars here for lack of another place on Hawthorne. I would love to sit here and have a drink with one...but prices for quality of the half dozen cigars "on tap" here aren't very good. But I suppose that's just like buying a beer at a bar compared to the grocery store. Great place to smoke and drink...but bring your own.
Pros: Cigar Bar
Cons: Limited selection, small

Starting this Saturday is the Portland Japanese Garden's "Behind the Shoji". Two dozen regional potters, carvers, and artists working in the Japanese aesthetic. AND it's in the Garden!

Skyline is classic. Good simple shakes too. Try also Higgens in SW, for a total sirloin burger with pickled items. Awesome international beer selection too - and always served in the appropriate glass - something rarely seen here.

I hate Yahoo. Everything about it. Going as far back as when they swallowed Geocities. This is great that PDX got that "honor" but Yahoo gives no reason why. Sunny. And rainy. Great.
