Mississippi Station   Jan 24

LOVE MISSISSIPPI STATION!!!  I love that we have this venue for Portland music.  It seems perfectly suited for small crowds looking to take in local music.  The acustics are pretty good and the overall ambiance is great!  From the Rejuvenation Chandeliers to the ceiling height and second floor seating...!!  Love the overall experience.  Add a killer outdoor seating area for grabbing grub prior to a show and you have a killer night of music and dinner.  It should also be noted that I like the shows that the "Station" gets.
Pros: LOCAL MUSIC! AMBIANCE! ACUSTICS, DINNER WITH OUTDOOR SEATING

Albina Press   Dec 31
Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Humbolt
4637 N Albina Ave
Portland, 97217
I have ventured around the Boise-Eliot area quite a bit over the years.  Truth be told, I love what is happening on Williams and overall what has happening to the area by way of retail development.  I tell you this because, after the dozens of shops that have opened, after maybe 3 or 4 new coffee shops opened their doors... Albina Press still reigns supreme in my world.  If it wasn't off the beaten path a bit, it would probably be overwhelmed with hipsters, tourists, etc.  The coffee is that good.  While I know they use Stumptown among maybe another roaster or two... they have something else going on here.  I personally use my mocha to measure some coffee shops and Albina's is the best I have ever had, period.  The chocolate, the way their baristas mix the chocolate into the shots, it is all with goodness!!  I love the location too... and that may influence me a bit, but focusing on their coffee I have to say I haven't had better... and I have had some good cups of Joe at the likes of Ristrettos, Barista, Stumptown, etc.  Anyways, you get the point.  GOOD ****ING JOE!
Pros: Good Joe, Great Location, Killer little Shop

Airplay Cafe - CLOSED   Dec 23
Category: Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Kerns
701 0 Burnside
Portland, 97232
As the rating indicates, the food is "Average (ok, meets the mark...)  the meets the mark part is a bit of stretch, but why not... 3 is average in my book.  I love the venue for entertaining kids and I love that they try to appease parents by serving drinks, etc.  Is this place still in business?
Pros: Music, Parental Considerations
Cons: Food is ok....

Heathman Restaurant   Dec 23
Category: French Restaurants
Neighborhood: Downtown
1001 SW Broadway St.
Portland, 97205
If you are looking for a nice elegant spot to dine and drink late night this is the spot.  One of Portland's classic venues for a bite.  Try the bar (classic decor, vibe), try the restaurant (fine dining (tourist heavy), or hit the lounge for live music, dessert and drinks!  The Heathman is a great retreat after a flick downtown or shopping if you are into that kind of thing.  I love their scotch and beer menu in particular.  How many places can you get a good Belgian to accompany your frites!  A bit of an older scene, but still worth a special occassion if it arises.
Pros: Ambiance, Location, History, Menu, Drink Menu
Cons: Demos.... ;-)

Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing   Dec 21
Category: Book Stores
Neighborhood: Cedar Hills
3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd
Beaverton, 97005
even if this version of Powells is in Beaverton it is still pretty good.  even if it feels like a barnes and noble or a borders it is still pretty good.  even if the suburban strip mall feel that it is housed in still makes you feel like part of the masses it is still pretty good.  The selection, the prices and the staff are all in line with what one would expect from Powells.  But nothing beats the downtown location!
Pros: Selection, Prices, Service

I would love to know if the kids track meets are going to happen again this year?  I suspect not, but being that my little speedster missed them I am dying to make it for one!

Facial Tattoos... and the fact "laid back" and "a better quality of life" means utter complacency to some.  Sorry, but it can be true sometimes.. ;(
