A large Homer Simpson statue has real possibilities.  Perhaps that's unfair to the city - suggesting a connection to Homer.  Better to have a large landmark that is more abstract.

Portland needs an iconic landmark other than the Made in Oregon sign.  The bridges are iconic but look generic in designs.  Maybe the Paul Bunyan guy.
